    Kostbar Gelb

For their first jointly developed project the artists Anna Pekala and Katja Piontek explored several places in the surrounding area of Frankfurt am Main separately. An exhibition without any title

Collaborating with artist Carolin Kastner and film-maker Eva Münnich, I initiated the project »o.T – untitled«. For three weeks we resurrected an unused gallery room in our hometown Offenbach with spontanuous activities.

    wegweiser zur ausstellung OT

Our colourful flyers and posters did not reveal much about what to expect. The idea was to question the prospects of classic exhibitions and to emphasize the processual character of our first collaboration.

Inspired by the white cube situation, we started to fill our temporary working space with ideas and experimented with various material. One time each week we invited guests to visit us and surprised them with a different staging.

    Ausstellung OT 2

Before we began to work we decided to document our work process. Therefore we used different media and declared the documentary a central theme of the whole project. In the end, various photos as well as texts from our blog were transferred into a printed matter for retrospection: Each issue gives an overview of one week. During the last presentation we were producing these issues of printed scrolls of paper which were installed in our room that day.

Graduation project: Books in the Digital Age

Hard-cover, likeable material and easy to handle – in this classic, almost sacred body I present my diploma-thesis about books in the digital age. The reader is offered an insight into various aspects of my discussion. Four different titles helped me to cope with the ambiguous character of books.

.»The Book as a Cultural Artefact«, »The Book and its Reader«, »The Book as a Product« and »The Book and its Designer«: A cover designed purely typographical does not yet reveal the specific inside of each volume…

For the following title I deliberately decided to break with the present concept by using the method of »copy-paste«. I replaced my own writings by a collection of articles I have found in different blogs.

    Graduation project: More details

I created a layout with variable parameters. This allowed me to change pictures, fonts and typographical details in each book. An easy access is given by well-structured texts, including links to short information, references or interrelated aspects in one of the other volumes.

    Graduation project: Making of

To produce the images of the book with the title »The Book and its Reader« I used this old-school modell of WISSNER CNC. All my illustrations were carved into wood for printing.

A book for artist Klodin Erb

This book presents the recent paintings of swiss artist Klodin Erb. The choice of printed linen cover gives an idea of the material of her canvases. In the picture-book some photos of the artist’s studio and enlarged details of the colourful paintings show the fresh an dynamic working. In addition one gets an impression of the amazing large-formats. A generous layout leaves enough space for imagination. Only three text-inserts, printed on glossy paper, are placed unexpectedly between the paintings. At the end one can find easily an overview about all the paintings in more detail.

The book was designed in collaboration with Alberto Vieceli and published to accompany the exhibition »DAS MÄDCHEN  DER BÄR  DAS TIER AUF DEM MÖBEL« in Kunstverein Schaffhausen.

    Slightly urban

Rich illustrated »slightly urban« presents a comprehensive overview of Rentae Buser’s early work to her most recent ouput. Under the glossy book-jacket  you can find accompanying essays by architects, art historians and critics that offer reflections on the artist’s approach.  I designed this publication for the swiss artist based in Basel during my internship at Prill&Vieceli in collaboration with Alberto Vieceli and Julia Kind.

    Playing with Statistics

Taking all statistics, surveys and studies in the media seriously, it must be easy to calculate life without any risk. In an extensive research, I tried to find a way to connect different statements with the purpose to eliminate risk at all. The result is a quite lunatic chart. I collected advice and headlines concering my basic needs: Eat, Sleep, Work and Play. For every topic I designed a poster, that can be hung separately or in group. On the posters one will find the chart with the result of the research as well as on other layers images, sources and information-graphics. Additionally, I created an alphabet inspired by typical forms of information-graphics and statistics.

    New literature from Japan

This book is a compendium of the contemporary Japanese literature. In collaboration with Fabian Borlein I planned, designed and realized it. 60 portraits of Japanese authors that are presented to the Western audience are the core of the book. Every text is two pages long and illustrated. Additionally the authors are shown by illustrated portraits with a special reference to their characters and works. In the middle of the book you can find a glossary that explains current trends und themes. Therefore also readers without having a certain knowledge about Japanese literature get an easy and entertaining access.

The texts are written by »J-Bungaku Arbeitskreis« of the J-W-G University Frankfurt. The Illustrations are made by the »Illustrationsklasse« of the Offenbach Academy of Arts and Design.

This experimental font is the result of a workshop I participated during my studies at Sint Lucas Antwerpen. The task was to learn to generate fonts with FontLab and work with the given subject »light«.

    Who is Walter van Beirendonck?

The assignment was to present an especially inspiring Belgian personality in a dossier of six pages. I chose fashion designer Walter van Beirendonck as I really like his open and playful way. Taking into account his eye-catching appearance and colourful work I designed the pages, that are limited to single-colour printing. I started playing with type and graphical elements, too. The conspicuous names of the collections are itemized on two pages that can be taken out and be hung up as a poster. In addition, a short text gives some information about the personality.

Installation inspired by a Belgian song

Wannes van der Velde is a Belgian singer and songwriter. He wrote a song about a dotty man who lives in a tiny mansard watching the development of the world outside from a safe distance. The illustrations show my personal ideas of such a plain and simple realm inspired by the melody of the wacky song. All the images and some passages of the song are printed on mangy wooden plates that remember on the materiality of a mansard. In this manner the coloured prints show that such a reclusive being must not inevitably be boring and drab.
